Rangers legend Ally McCoist has warned Newcastle United against being tempted by the bright lights of big money high profile signings this summer, and instead urged them to follow the sensible route Eddie Howe has so far adopted.
Given the potential wealth available to boss Howe, the Toon have been linked with audacious bids for Karim Benzema and Lionel Messi with both players leaving Real Madrid and PSG respectively.
The offer of Champions League football will undoubtedly be an attraction to numerous players across Europe in the coming weeks, but McCoist has poured cold water on any suggestions United could be tempted to go down the galactico route, something they've steered well clear of since their big-money takeover last year.
"A, I don't they will and B, I don't think it's a good idea. My main reason for that is because all these guys are effectively running down their careers, they're at that stage of their careers," Scottish favourite McCoist said on talkSPORT.

"Whereas, I think Newcastle, as a club, are at the stage where they're building rather than doing anything else, plus the fact, it would make everyone hate them, wouldn't it?
"I think Newcastle have now got themselves in a position where they could potentially go for the Benzemas, the Ronaldos 10 or 15 years ago which is where they want to be."
