Alleyway cordoned off after person 'sexually assaulted' in daytime attack

An alleyway was cordoned off after a person was reportedly sexually assaulted.

Police were called to Back Broadway in Norris Green following reports of an allegation of sexual assault on Monday, August 15. The incident was reported to have happened between 1pm and 2pm.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said the suspect is described as being in his mid to late 20s, around 5ft 8in tall, medium build and wearing dark clothing. A cordon was in place today at the entrance of Back Broadway off Utting Avenue East and at the other end off Broad Lane.

Businesses and people living in the area were concerned when they saw the cordon. One shopkeeper told the ECHO police hadn't told them why there was a scene in the area, he said: "Local residents have been coming in asking what has happened as they are really concerned. One girl came in and said she was worried because she finished work late at 11pm and doesn’t know what’s happened."

Detective Inspector Paul McVeigh said: “The victim is currently being supported by our specially trained officers, and the investigation is in the very early stages as we seek to establish the full circumstances of what has taken place. We are currently examining a number of lines of enquiry including CCTV and forensic and potential witnesses who were in the area yesterday morning.

“I would appeal for anyone who believes they could assist the investigation and saw something suspicious to contact us as a matter of urgency.”
