Allerton chippy criticised by health inspectors over safety rating

An Allerton takeaway has been slammed by health inspectors who have slapped a damning health safety rating on the venue.

Officers from Liverpool Council ’s environmental health team gave Yona on Heath Road a zero out of five rating following a visit to the takeaway last month. It marks the completion of a steady decline at the venue over the last three inspections, having been marked one out of five less than two years ago and two out of five in February 2019.

As a result, a brief report made available by the Food Standards Agency on its website has said that major improvement is required at the South Liverpool takeaway. Things have not proved much better for Hee Kee Restaurant on London Road in the city centre which inspectors deemed was also in need of improvement when they visited during the same week.

Officers said the hygienic food handling, cleanliness of the building and management of food safety were all deemed to need major improvements at Yona. This includes hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage. According to its website, Yona claims to be “constantly striving to improve our service and quality in order to give our customers the very best experience.”

The management of food safety at Hee Kee, including the provision of a “system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future” was called into question by inspectors who said major improvement was required.

Improvement was necessary across the board however, following the findings of the April inspection. The cleanliness and condition of facilities and building, including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control, to enable good food hygiene was also called into question.

According to its Facebook page, “the concept of Hee Kee originated from Hong Kong in the 1970s and 1980s which has derived a unique HK eating style and spirit (economically effective, fast and delicious).” Both venues can appeal against the rating given and ask for a re-inspection.

The ECHO contacted both Yona for comment. Hee Kee Restaurant declined to offer a response.
