Alleged ringleader refused bail over $10m car fraud

The accused director of a criminal group has been charged over an alleged scheme to fleece millions from financing companies for luxury cars that did not exist.

The syndicate allegedly used dozens of stolen identities to apply for fraudulent car loans, racking up an estimated $10 million in ill-gotten funds.

Xi Peng, 37, was the latest arrested over the alleged fraud and is accused of knowingly directing the activities of the criminal group.

He faced court on Thursday and remains in custody.

He also faces several charges for allegedly dealing with proceeds of crime and is set to return to court in November.

Another of the scheme's alleged participants, Peng Bian, 40, willreturn to court later in September after being charged with proceeds of crime and criminal group offences in August.

Police seized vehicles, Rolex watches and other luxury jewellery, and about $200,000 worth of wine when he was taken into custody.

Antonia Suntsova, 31, is on bail to return to court in October, charged with more than 100 fraud offences accusing her of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception.

She also faces a drug possession charge over some magic mushrooms allegedly found in her home when police arrested her in May.

Suntsova is also being pursued through the courts by Toyota Finance Australia.
