Alleged kidnapping twist in Newcastle East apartment stabbing case

A KIDNAPPING charge has been laid against a man who was allegedly stabbed inside a Newcastle East apartment last week.

An 18-year-old remains before the court charged with recklessly wounding a 46-year-old man at a unit block on Nobbys Road just after 2pm on August 16.

Now, the older man, Michael Blanch, faces two serious allegations after police arrested him at John Hunter Hospital, where he was being treated for head injuries after the alleged altercation.

Blanch was taken to Newcastle Police station and charged with taking or detaining a person with the intent to obtain an advantage, and aggravated enter dwelling with intent - deprive liberty.

He was refused bail in Newcastle Local Court in the days after his arrest, and will remain behind bars before facing court again in October.

The development comes after police were called to reports of a concern for welfare a week ago.

Newcastle police, including detectives and the rescue squad, rushed to the scene under lights and siren, along with ambulance paramedics.

Police said at the time officers were forced to bust into the apartment and intervene in an altercation, and found the teenager had allegedly stabbed the older man.

Xander Eathen Barry, 18, was arrested at the scene then granted conditional bail in an out-of-sessions Newcastle court hearing on Saturday, August 17.

Initial investigations led police to believe the two men were known to each other.
