Alleged 'gratuitous violence' against pregnant mum 'almost unspeakable'

A magistrate has labelled a man's repeated alleged attacks of his heavily pregnant partner "gratuitous violence" that is "almost unspeakable".

The woman is said to have suffered chipped teeth, repeated strangulation, beatings, and verbal abuse in the last month of her pregnancy, with the man allegedly saying she "deserved to be hurt".

The alleged attacker, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had his second bid for freedom denied in the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Magistrate Robert Cook said the alleged "violent nature of his acts and his conduct" was "simply extraordinary".

Mr Cook denied bail, saying "I have no confidence that the protected person would be in fact protected" if the alleged offender was released from jail.

The man, aged in his 30s, is also accused of strangling his seven-year-old son.

He has pleaded not guilty to 27 charges including unlawfully confining a person, drug trafficking, aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm on a pregnant person, threatening to kill, and choking, suffocating or strangling another person.

'Stop hurting mummy'

Police documents state that during school holidays in July, when the woman was almost nine months pregnant, the man asked her to get his bong and some water for it.

He then allegedly became angry and said "you made me have a bad trip" before grabbing her throat and choking her while pushing her down on a bed.

The man is accused of repeatedly hitting her in the head, and previously told her if she went to police no one would believe her and he would pay people to lie and say otherwise

Later that month, he woke up about 4.30am "agitated" believing he had missed his 8.30am flight to Bali.

He then allegedly became angry at the woman for not waking him earlier and demanded she pack his bags, before he grabbed her with his hand around her throat.

The man ended up missing his flight after taking a Xanax and going back to sleep.

That same day, the pregnant woman estimates he hit her face about 100 times.

The force of the alleged attack is said to have chipped two of her teeth, caused swollen ears, a bloody nose and bruising around her eye.

The woman tried to protect herself by dropping to the floor and rolling into a ball, covering her face with her hands, as he allegedly threatened to kill her.

The documents state that when he asked her to call Canberra Airport to organise another flight, the woman called because she "wanted the opportunity to talk to anyone as she knew the defendant would stop hitting her whilst she was talking".

She was crying on the phone and begging for help to book a new flight while the man is said to have continued to berate her and yell threats. The person who took the call was so concerned for the woman's safety they called police.

When the call ended, the man allegedly hit her again before grabbing a pillow and holding it over the heavily pregnant woman's face.

She couldn't breathe and managed to move her hand under the pillow and create an air opening.

Their seven-year-old child is said to have yelled "stop hurting mummy".

The child used an Xbox in his room to message another person, asking them to come to the home and calm his dad down because he was scared his father would kill his mother.

When the other person arrived at the home the dad "was calm and acted as if nothing had happened".

Shortly afterwards officers arrived and the alleged attacker is accused of ordering the woman to stay in her room, before telling police she was not at home.

The man is accused of choking his partner on numerous occasions, one time grabbing her by the neck, pinning her against a wall and lifting her off the ground.

Another time, the woman fled to a neighbour's unit but he allegedly climbed over a balcony and into the home, dragging her and kicking her in the back.

He allegedly told the woman "she had ruined his life by being pregnant, and for not getting him to the airport on time for his international flight".

"I will kill you if you ever get a family violence order again," the man allegedly said.

The man was arrested in late July, but at the time the alleged victim was "too scared" to give a statement to police.

He is set to return to court later this month.
