Alleged family violence offender arrested after woman knocked unconscious

A 32-year-old man will face the ACT Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with allegedly assaulting his partner during three separate recent incidents, one of which saw the victim knocked unconscious.

The first of the alleged family violence incidents occurred on July 25, when the man and his partner were at a Florey residence.

After an argument, the man then allegedly began to choke the woman and only stopped when other occupants in the home became aware of the incident and intervened.

On August 19, the same man allegedly assaulted the woman while they were in a vehicle, slapping her and grabbing her hair. The woman attempted to flee but he pursued her and pulled her to the ground.

The woman was rendered unconscious during the incident and required hospitalisation as a result of her injuries.

On August 28, the same man allegedly assaulted the woman again while at an address in Braddon, slapping her and pulling her to the ground, causing further injuries.

The victim attended Woden police station on Tuesday to report the series of alleged assaults.

Police then attended the man's workplace and arrested him.

He has been charged with three counts of aggravated common assault, two counts of aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm, choking, suffocating or strangling another person, reckless threat to kill a person, aggravated reckless threat to inflict grievous bodily harm, and aggravated common assault.

Police have again reaffirmed they stand ready to assist victims of family violence.

They say that victims in these situations should contact the police attendance line when it is safe to do so on 131 444 or phone triple zero in an emergency.
