A man's alleged repeated choking of his "fearful" partner is "a clear precursor to homicide", a prosecutor has told a court.
Liam Nizam Shahriar, 23, sat with his eyes closed, head back, and took several deep breaths when he first appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
After hearing his bid for freedom had failed, while being escorted back to the cells, the man told supporters "love you both, see ya".
"Be strong," a man said.
A prosecutor told the court Shahriar and the alleged victim had only been in a relationship for a short time, but she was "extremely fearful for her own safety".
"She is scared he will kill her [if released on bail]," the lawyer told the court.
The prosecutor said a friend had filmed Shahriar choking the alleged victim and the 23-year-old was "wholly undeterred by the presence of another person".
They stated a friend had also set up a camera in the alleged victim's home to capture Shahriar's violent behaviour.
Shahriar is yet to enter pleas to charges including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, choking, suffocating, or strangling another person, using a carriage service to harass and assaulting a front-line community service provider.
He was on two suspended sentence orders and a good behaviour order for violent offending at the time of his latest alleged crimes.
Police allege that over several weeks, Shahriar assaulted his partner numerous times.
In early September, he allegedly struck the woman multiple times on her face and body.
Court documents state she went to the hospital the next day due to "extreme pain" and an x-ray revealed she had one broken rib and two fractured ribs.
Photographs of the alleged injuries taken by a friend are said to show a large bruise in the shape of a hand where she had been struck.
Another time, Shahriar is said to have tried to verbally fight with the woman, and when she tried to remove herself from the situation, he allegedly choked her and dragged her by the throat.
Police claim on another occasion, he threw a remote at the woman's back and head before he grabbed her by the neck and choked her again.
The document alleges Shahriar had previously told the woman "he would kill her if she ever tried to end their relationship".
While waiting for police on Monday, she allegedly received 32 abusive messages and 43 calls from Shahriar.
When police arrived the woman was hiding and "extremely emotionally scared and shaking, whilst also crying and saying how she feared for her life".
Shahriar was arrested about 11.25am, and taken to the watch house, where he allegedly damaged CCTV cameras and an intercom system in his cell.
He is also accused of spitting in the face of a police officer.
On Tuesday, Legal Aid lawyer, Lesley Jayasuriya, said Shahriar worked as a concreter three days a week, and was worried he would lose his job if remanded in custody.
Magistrate Robert Cook denied bail, stating: "I don't know what bail conditions I could [put in] place that would see the risk for potential harm reduced."
Shahriar is set to return to court later this month.
