Nonetheless, instead of turning on the winger, the Gallowgate faithful chanted Saint-Maximin's name, minutes before helping set up the winner. The 25-year-old nutmegged Willy Boly in the middle of the park to set Joelinton on a marauding run into the Wolves half, a move that culminated with the Magpies winning a penalty.
Responding to a tweet highlighting the incident, Saint-Maximin said: "It's very important to have your support." His inconsistency has frustrated Newcastle supporters in recent weeks but the Frenchman remains an integral part of Eddie Howe's survival bid.
