ALLAN MCGREGOR is closing in on a new deal to extend his stay at Rangers after deciding to continue playing on for another season.
And the 40-year-old could also take his first steps into coaching by becoming part of the backroom staff at Auchenhowie this term.
Herald and Times Sport understands McGregor has opted not to hang up his gloves as he readies himself for another shot at glory in an attempt to add to his glittering Ibrox medal haul.
McGregor has spent recent weeks deliberating on his future and is now ready to commit to Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side for a further 12 months.
The keeper made what looked like a farewell appearance during the closing stages of the Scottish Cup victory over Hearts last month as he replaced Jon McLaughlin for the final minutes of the 2-0 Hampden victory.
McGregor refused to rule out extending his career in the aftermath of the cup triumph and he is now poised to accept the offer that is on the table and put pen-to-paper on another deal with his boyhood heroes.
Boss Van Bronckhorst has already tied up experienced campaigners Scott Arfield and Steven Davis for another 12 months, while defender Connor Goldson gave the Dutchman a huge pre-season boost last week by agreeing terms on a bumper four-year deal at Ibrox.
Now McGregor is set to follow suit after deciding that he still has another campaign in him as Rangers bid to regain their Premiership title and prepare for a crack at continental competition following their run to the Europa League final in Seville.
The deal for McGregor is another piece of the jigsaw in place for Van Bronckhorst but he could still have a decision to make over who starts the campaign as his first choice as McLaughlin gets set to stake his claim during the pre-season schedule.
That scenario would leave McGregor more time to focus on his coaching career in the coming months as he looks to the longer term future and considers his options beyond the end of his second playing stint at Ibrox.
