Allan McGregor proves big game player status as Rangers fall short against Napoli

Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor

RYAN JACK never doubted that keeper Allan McGregor would rise to the Champions League occasion as his Ibrox heroics went unrewarded against Napoli.

The 40-year-old replaced the injured Jon McLaughlin between the sticks for the Group A clash and made just his second start of the season for Rangers.

And he showed that he is still capable of magical moments with two brilliant stops to deny Piotr Zieliński from the penalty spot on a dramatic night of European action.

McGregor was beaten by a Matteo Politano strike from 12 yards before Giacomo Raspadori and Tanguy Ndombele secured the win for Luciano Spalletti's side.

It was still a night to remember for McGregor, though, and Jack knew the Light Blues legend wouldn't let the side down when called upon.

Jack said: "I am delighted for him. He has been number two so far this season and Jon has been in the team. Jon picked up an injury, which is unfortunate for him, but you could see what Allan can bring.

"He is a big game player and I have seen it on many occasions in my time playing with him. Nights like these are what he thrives on and you saw it again on Wednesday night."
