Allan McGregor in Celtic vs Rangers vote of confidence as Ibrox legend says keeper will bounce back from County clangers

Kenny Miller insists there’s nobody Rangers would want in goal against Celtic more than Allan McGregor as he defended the veteran keeper over his Dingwall disaster.

McGregor dropped two clangers in an uncharacteristically sloppy performance as Rangers drew 3-3 with Ross County on Saturday.

It led to question marks over his position for the visit to Celtic Park in Wednesday’s crunch Old Firm where the Hoops can jump Rangers into top spot with a victory.

McGregor turns 40 on Monday and with back-up Jon McLaughlin having signed a new deal at the weekend some sections of the Gers support have called for a change between the sticks.

But Miller reckons his former Ibrox and Scotland team mate McGregor’s big game presence will come to the fore again in the derby.

He said: "Come Wednesday night, there is nobody you’d want in goal other than Allan McGregor.

"Like Andy Goram was back in the 90s, he is the one when it's come to these big saves. He's been the one that's had a big, big impact on Rangers winning these games of football.

"I've no doubt he could respond on Wednesday night with that type of performance.

"He should be in goal, he deserves to be in goal and I don't believe he's done yet.

"He'll decide when he's ready to be done.

"It might be at the end of the season, it might be at the end of next season.

"But at the moment, I still think he's got a huge role to play."

McGregor was also criticised for a goal conceded in the last minute in October’s 1-1 draw with Hearts at Ibrox.

But Miller is adamant he still has plenty left in the tank with McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie not at the same level.

He told BBC Radio Scotland: “He came out against Hearts, missed a cross and Craig Halkett scored and he had the two mistakes against Ross County.

"He was exposed. Those mistakes didn't necessarily have to happen had the defenders and midfielders done their job properly.

"I can't think of any other time Allan made any real errors.

“He’s absolutely reliable. I don't think he's done yet.

“It's a flash in the pan, a bad day at the office.

"For me, it's a huge void to fill and I'm not sure they have that in the building, someone to fill McGregor's shoes yet.

"If you're thinking about dropping him you need to make sure who's coming in can do the same job at the same level and there's not many of these guys about.”
