Allan McGregor insists Rangers will “go for it as much as we can” in the Viaplay Cup final as the veteran goalkeeper admitted he has put all thoughts of extending his Ibrox stay on the backburner.
And he all but ruled out any prospect of a shock Scotland comeback for the start of the Euro 2024 campaign next month with No. 1 Craig Gordon injured and David Marshall retired, joking that he’s “booked his holidays” during the international break.
McGregor joined team-mates James Tavernier and Steven Davis in being induced into the Ibrox club’s Hall of Fame and that huge honour came at the start of a massive week for the club with the Viaplay Cup final against Celtic on Sunday at Hampden. The 41-year-old signed a one-year extension last summer to take him to 16 years’ service over two spells and Beale hasn’t ruled out staying longer.
McGregor will decide at the end of the season but in the short term wants to add another trophy, with Gers unbeaten in 14 under Beale, to his glittering CV and ahead of the final told Sky Sports: “It’s big, it’s a one-off game and the chance for a trophy.
“It’s nothing to do with the league but the chance to win silverware and that’s what this club is all about. We’re in the final and we’ll go for it as much as we can. Obviously it will be difficult, they’re a good side - as are we - it’s a one-off game, cup tie so it will be difficult but you never know.
“The momentum is very important. At a club like this you need to win every game. The fans demand that, we demand that from ourselves and we know we need to do that to win trophies. It’s a given at this club.
“To get to 41 and still be here is remarkable to be honest with you and I don’t know how I’m doing it but I’m glad to be here. It’s down to a lot of dedication. I’m in the gym more. I remember Davie Weir being in the gym when he was a similar age to me, stretching every morning for half an hour. It’s nothing really - what’s half an hour in the morning if it keeps you going? And it definitely helps.
“I just take it game by game. At this age you need to. I’m not really looking that far. I didn’t do it last season and I’m not going to do it this season. I’ll take it game by game and see what happens in the summer.”
On a possible emergency call up for Scotland’s game against Cyprus and Spain, McGregor said: “I wouldn’t have thought so. Nobody has spoken to me about and I haven’t thought about it really so I’d find it highly unlikely. I think I’ve got my holidays booked for that week!”
