The clock is ticking on Rangers’ return to pre-season but there is still a huge question mark over the goalkeeping position.
But it's set to become a little bit clearer with Allan McGregor set to commit to another year at Ibrox like fellow veterans Steven Davis and Scott Arfield.
It will be his 16th year at the club, over two spells, but will it be as first choice or behind Jon McLaughlin?
And what happens to Manchester United-linked Robby McCrorie in all of this? Will the Scotland squad keeper now have to move on to get the game time he craves?
Bu for McGregor the uncertainty has shades of the summer of 2009 when he faced arguably his biggest pre-season battle for the No. 1 spot.
Neil Alexander had finished the previous season between the sticks and helped Walter Smith’s side to a league and cup double.
It was a case of de ja vu for Alexander who found himself as the No. 1 a year earlier as he helped Gers to the UEFA Cup final after being thrust in for the run-in.
But both situations arose in quite different circumstances. In 2008 it was simply down to an injury for McGregor.
The following year it came due to McGregor’s part in the infamous ‘Boozegate’ when he was told he might never play for the club again.
The 2009 pre-season was hyped as a real glove battle with many believing Alexander would be the man who would start the campaign.
Smith gave them a half each in the first friendly that summer against Nuremberg in Germany and there was no real club who would get the shirt.
And it wasn’t until the team was named for the opening game of the 2009/10 season with McGregor starting a 4-1 win over Falkirk at Ibrox that it was clear who had won the battle.
Smith said at the time: “Neil will take it badly and if I was him I would take it badly as well. In many ways it's unfair on Alexander because he has played exceptionally well for us.
"Both keepers know that if they have the jersey they must show form to keep it.”
Depending on Van Bronckhorst’s thoughts on the goalkeeping situation, McGregor could find himself in a similar situation 13 years on from that summer.
Rangers only have to look across the city for a reminder of how crucial the goalkeeping position is and how fans who believe McGregor’s not up to the job of being Gers No. 1 should be careful what they wish for.
It was two summers ago when Celtic were badly caught out after Craig Gordon left the club, unhappy with the contract offer on the table.
When Fraser Forster failed to return to Parkhead, the Hoops signed Vasilis Barkas but the Greek proved a hugely expensive mistake.
Barkas has only just temporarily ended his nightmare in the east end of Glasgow by recently moving to Dutch side Utrecht on loan.
He failed to cut it at Celtic and then boss Neil Lennon was forced to try Scott Bain and Conor Hazard at various points in a catastrophic campaign.
McGregor was first choice during a run that took them to the Europa League Final in Seville.
Admittedly, he was at fault on occasions during a stuttering league campaign but does McLaughlin possess the quality to be the Rangers No. 1?
