All the shops, businesses and attractions that will be closed for the Queen's funeral

A range of businesses and services have confirmed they will be closing or reducing operations on Monday for Queen Elizabeth II's funeral. The day has been declared a Bank Holiday and many employers will give staff the day off.

The list of closures includes some national chains of supermarkets, pubs and cinemas. Many Welsh council facilities are also affected, while schools and colleges across the UK are due to close.

From theme parks to recycling centres, here are the closures which have been announced ahead of the September 19 Bank Holiday.

Shopping

Lidl, Morrisons, Iceland, Co-op, M&S and Aldi branches will be closed all day, while Waitrose will shut all stores in Wales. Asda supermarkets will be open only after 5pm.

Large Tesco and Sainsbury's stores across Wales will be shut all day. From 5pm onwards Sainsbury's Local and Tesco Express branches will be open. Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco will close petrol station forecourts before 5pm though some will open afterwards.

Other retailers shutting for the day include John Lewis, House of Fraser, Argos, B&Q, Currys, Homebase, Jack Wills, Primark, Specsavers, Lakeland, Wickes, IKEA, Dunelm and Wilko. The McArthurGlen designer retail outlet in Bridgend will also shut for the day, and a significant number of stores will be closed at Cardiff's Mermaid Quay and Red Dragon centres.

Pubs, places to eat and leisure

JD Wetherspoon has said most of its pubs will open later than usual, after the funeral finishes. Most pubs in the Fuller’s and JW Lees groups will be open, while Greene King pubs will open early to screen the funeral from 11am.

McDonald’s will shut all UK restaurants until 5pm and Pizza Hut's will be closed until 4pm. Greggs bakeries will close for the day. Most Costa Coffee branches will be shut.

Hollywood Bowl branches will be open after 1.30pm. Cinema chains Odeon, Cineworld and Showcase will be shut. Vue cinemas will not show films but at some locations will broadcast the funeral for free. Vue has published a list of its cinemas which will not be showing the funeral, none of which are in Wales.

While Better gyms will be shut throughout the day, while PureGym locations will be open before 10am and after 2pm.

  • Wiggleys Fun Farm
  • Mountain View Ranch
  • Welsh Mountain Zoo
  • Limitless Trampoline Park
  • Jump Jam Trampoline Park

Blaenau Gwent

Waste and recycling services will not take place on Monday in Blaenau Gwent. Collections will take place a day later than normal between Tuesday and Saturday. Household waste and recycling centres in the area will be closed.

Bridgend

Community recycling centres will be closed. There will be no waste and recycling collections, with all collections taking place one day later than normal up to and including Saturday, September 24.

Halo Leisure and Awen Cultural Trust have confirmed that leisure centres, swimming pools, libraries and venues such as the Grand Pavilion will also be closed.

Caerphilly

Caerphilly Borough Council will collect waste a day later than usual, from Tuesday through to Saturday. Libraries, leisure centres and council visitor attractions Llancaiach Fawr, Blackwood Miners Institute, Cwmcarn Visitor Centre, Coffi Vista and The Winding House will be closed. The council’s Register Office will be open for pre-booked ceremonies only.

Cardiff

Waste collection in Cardiff will run as normal throughout the week, as collection days run from Tuesday to Friday. Recycling centres will be closed including the trade waste centre and weighbridge service.

All council offices will be closed. Cemetery sites, gardens of remembrance and book of remembrance rooms will be open as normal and will close at 4pm.

All Better leisure centres, children's centres, venues and spas will be closed next Monday. The closed leisure centres include Active Eastern Leisure Centre, Fairwater Leisure Centre, Llanishen Leisure Centre, Penylan Leisure Centre, Pentwyn Leisure Centre, Western Leisure Centre, Channel View Centre (CF11), Maindy Centre and STAR Hub.

Other public buildings, including the Museum of Cardiff, City Hall, Bute Park Visitor Centre, Cardiff Market, all hubs and libraries and Llanover Arts Centre, will also be closed. St David's Hall will be open as usual. Parts of the Red Dragon Centre are closed including the Odeon cinema.

Carmarthenshire

In Carmarthenshire, if your waste collection day is Monday, the collection will take place on Saturday, September 17. This also affects garden, hygiene and nappy waste collections.

Council recycling centres in Trostre, Llanelli, Nantycaws, Wernddu, Ammanford, and Whitland will all be closed. Country parks and leisure centres will be open but restricted hours apply to leisure centres. Museums, libraries, theatres and archives will be closed. Carmarthenshire Registration Office will be open on Monday for essential services.

Neath Port Talbot

There will be no refuse collections in Neath Port Talbot, including black bag and bin waste, nappies, absorbent hygiene products and garden waste. These collections will be one day late. Normal collections will resume the following Monday.

There will be no recycling collections on the Bank Holiday. These will be made on the following Monday. On the days after the Bank Holiday, recycling collections will remain as normal.

All council venues, including Port Talbot and Neath Civic Centres, recycling centres, libraries, public toilets and Neath Register Office will be closed to the public for the day.

Margam Country Park car park and facilities will be closed but there will be access for pedestrian visitors. Margam Crematorium grounds will remain open to enable the public to visit graves.

Ornamental Gardens and Memorial Parks in Neath Port Talbot will open as usual. The gates to Gnoll Estate Country Park will open and close at the usual times, but the visitor centre and toilets will be closed all day.

Merthyr Tydfil

All council offices and departments will be closed. There will be no waste collections on Monday and collections will take place a day later than normal. Staff will be working the following Saturday to catch up on recycling, refuse and green waste collections.

The bereavement services office will be closed. The household waste and recycling centres at Dowlais and Aberfan will be closed on Monday. The telephone number for emergencies on drains serving Merthyr Valley Homes properties during the Bank Holiday is 01685 385231.

Rhondda Cynon Taf

The council and its major services will be closed apart from out-of-hours emergencies. There will be no refuse collections. Residents whose collections were scheduled for Monday are asked to leave items at their normal collection point on Tuesday, and this applies to all recycling, including nappies, food and green waste.

For the rest of the week, waste collectors will try to minimise disruption as much as possible but if items are not collected on the normal collection day, residents should leave them at the kerbside and crews will get to them as soon as possible. If needed the crews will work over the weekend to collect any outstanding recycling and waste.

All community recycling centres will be closed, along with the register office and municipal buildings in Pontypridd. The main office for cemeteries and bereavement services at Glyntaff will be closed on Monday. No changes have been announced for cemetery grounds.

Leisure centres, libraries, theatres and public toilets will be closed but all parks will remain open as normal. Toilets in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, Aberdare Park and Dare Valley Country Park will be open.

Swansea

All non-essential Swansea Council services will be paused including recycling sites, the Guildhall, Grand Theatre, libraries, museums and community centres. Swansea Market will be shut.

The Civic Centre will be closed although Swansea's book of condolence will be available there for people to sign. Refuse collections will be suspended and waste collections will run a day late throughout the week before returning to normal.

Swansea bus station will remain open but individual bus operators may alter their normal timetables in line with the Bank Holiday, so passengers are advised to check before planning journeys.

Vale of Glamorgan

Recycling and waste collection will be suspended and pushed back by one day for the rest of the week. The council is advising members of the public to place their recycling and waste out one day after their scheduled collection dates. Bulky waste collections will also be pushed back by one day. The council is aiming to complete all bulky waste collections by the end of Friday, September 23.

All leisure centres and council office buildings, libraries and adult learning centres will be closed on the Bank Holiday. Penarth Pier Café will also be closed, as will Court Road car park. Parking will be available on Wyndham Street.

Public toilets and parks will be open. Toilets and bins will not be cleaned on the Bank Holiday.
