All the ridiculous things Jamie Roberts achieved to become the most capable Welsh rugby player ever

As he bids farewell to his playing career, there's very little that Jamie Roberts hasn't already achieved - both on and off the pitch.

Rugby's truest renaissance man has effectively done it all. If there's any stones left covered, then it must be for good reason because the 35-year-old has spent his 15-odd years in the sport sampling as much of life's variety as he can muster.

Starting with the obvious, he's played for his country on 94 occasions, scoring 12 tries. Becoming a mainstay in the Welsh midfield alongside Jonathan Davies, he was a part of Wales' Grand Slam-winning sides in 2008 and 2012, while he also won another Six Nations title in 2013.

As well as success in Europe's yearly showpiece, Roberts graced two World Cups - being part of the 2011 side that reached the semi-finals before helping Wales unceremoniously knock England out of their own World Cup in the pool stages four years later. He also toured with the Lions twice, being the man of the series with a revelatory outing in South Africa in 2009 and then winning the series in Australia in 2013 - even scoring a try in the final Test after being brought into the side at the expense of Brian O'Driscoll.

While he never toured New Zealand with the Lions, nor did he manage to get one over them in the red jersey of Wales, he can claim a victory over the All Blacks as another career highlight. That came in 2009, when he formed the part of a star-studded Barbarians team who had spent the better part of the week drinking and yet still inflicted defeat on New Zealand.

On the club front, he first plied his trade for Cardiff RFC - during which time he also won a U21s Grand Slam with Wales in 2005 alongside future internationals Alun Wyn Jones and Ian Evans.

Before long, he progressed into the Cardiff Blues' first team - where he was part of the side that lifted the EDF Energy Cup in 2009 with a swashbuckling display against Gloucester, before winning the Amlin Challenge Cup against Toulon a year later.

That triumph made them the first - and, still to this day, only - Welsh side to pick up European silverware. The following season, Roberts played a crucial role as the Arms Park side narrowly missed out on a Heineken Cup final place after a penalty shoot-out defeat to Leicester Tigers.

Roberts left Cardiff in 2013 for France, spending two years at Racing Metro, before enjoying spells at Harlequins, Bath, Stormers, Dragons and, most recently, Waratahs. And, for good measure, he turned out for Cambridge in the Varsity match at Twickenham in 2015.

As a result, as well as gracing each of rugby's best competitions, he's lived in some of the world's finest places. He’s called Paris, London, Cape Town and Sydney his home - throwing himself into whichever culture he's inhabited.

When the Lions managed to get their 2021 tour of South Africa on track after talk of postponement, Roberts was the port of call for the pack of travelling journalists when it came to looking for the best places to eat in Cape Town. The fact that the Silo Hotel came with the much-travelled Roberts' approval held more sway than any Tripadvisor review possibly could.

His time in Paris often consisted of riding his black Vespa around the cobbled Parisian streets, finding a cafe to order a crepe and espresso. And when he lived in Bath, he resided in the stunning Georgian architecture of Royal Crescent - even renting out deckchairs so tourists could enjoy the scenery.

Of course, while his rugby CV and the places that it has taken him is remarkably impressive, it's the off-the-field stuff that truly embellishes his career. Some might argue that his playing style, with his hard-carrying becoming a shorthand for Warrenball, was prosaic - but his everyday life is anything but.

He's played guitar with the Manic Street Preachers on two occasions - once during the Lions tour of 2013 and then again in Japan in 2019. A mere footnote in the man's many interesting stories.

His autobiography tells of how he drove the singer Lana Del Rey around Monte Carlo in a Rolls-Royce Wraith after she and Bono had watched him play paddle tennis with Prince Albert of Monaco. It's a far cry from crashing over the gainline at a wet and wintry Arms Park.

Another bizarre piece of trivia that could only be attributed to Roberts is that a corner of Adolf Hitler’s desk resides in the family home in Newport. Roberts’s paternal grandfather was in Berlin in 1945 and brought it home as a keepsake from the Führer’s abandoned office.

Then there's his academic exploits. He graduated in medicine from Cardiff University in the summer 2013, going on to add a first class honours intercalated degree in Sport and Exercise Science.

Then came a stint at Queens College, Cambridge University, where he embarked on a Masters of Philosophy in Medical Science. He undertook that MPhil on a two-year, part-time basis, continuing his studies after moving on from Cambridge.

Most recently, he gained an Executive Masters in Business Administration from Loughborough University, which he has been studying for over the last few years, alongside his rugby endeavours.

That initial medical degree that saw him qualify as a doctor came in use during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, when he volunteered his services to work for the NHS to help in the fight against coronavirus. He took up a position as a clinical innovation fellow, which saw him working in a motivational role and on the communications side.

Recently, he's also started taking on more punditry work on television, radio and podcasts - hinting at where his future might lie now his boots are firmly on the peg. In truth though, with a CV like Roberts', it's anyone's guess what he does next.
