All the resignations from Boris Johnson's Government in 2022

Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid have become the latest ministers to resign from Boris Johnson's Government.

Sunak announced his departure by sharing his letter of resignation to the Prime Minister on Twitter on Tuesday evening. In the letter Sunak wrote: “To leave ministerial office is a serious matter at any time. For me to step down as Chancellor while the world is suffering the economic consequences of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and other serious challenges is a decision that I have not taken lightly.

“However, the public rightly expect Government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously. I recognise this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I'm resigning.”

Javid also shared his letter of resignation to the PM on Twitter. The most damning line from Javid’s letter read: “I can no longer, in good conscience, continue serving in this Government. I am instinctively a team player but the British people also rightly expect integrity from their Government."

Here's a list of Government departures under Boris Johnson’s watch in 2022. There have been nine resignations this year so far.

Sunak resigned from his role as Chancellor of the Exchequer on July 5. His reason for resigning was that the PM’s approach to the “economy” was “fundamentally too different” from his own.

2. Sajid Javid

Javid resigned from his role as Secretary of State for Health & Social Care on July 5. He previously resigned from his role as Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020.

3. Christopher Pincher

Pincher resigned on June 30 from his role as deputy chief whip over an allegation of drunken "groping", the Mirror reports. He said resigning was "the right thing to do in the circumstances" and apologised to everyone concerned after 'embarrassing himself'.

4. Oliver Dowden

Dowden resigned from his role as Chairman of the Conservative Party on June 24, 2022. He resigned over the results of the Tiverton & Honiton and Wakefield by-elections.

5. John Lamont

Lamont resigned from his role as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Foreign Secretary on June 6. He resigned after voting against Johnson as leader in a vote of confidence.

6. Paul Holmes

Holmes resigned from his role as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Home Secretary on May 27. He raised concerns about the Government’s “toxic culture” following the Sue Gray report.

7. The Lord Wolfson of Tredegar QC

David Wolfson resigned from his role as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Justice on April 13. He resigned over Partygate and Johnson’s "repeated rule breaking and breaches of the criminal law in Downing Street".

8. Angela Richardson MP

Richardson resigned from her role as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities on January 31. She resigned over the Government’s handling of Partygate.

9. Lord Agnew of Oulton

Lord Agnew resigned from his role as Minister of State for Efficiency and Transformation on January 24. He quit Johnson's government over its "lamentable track record" on Covid loans fraud, as reported by the Mirror .
