All the places you can recycle your Christmas tree in Merseyside

With another Christmas over, there are several ways you can get rid of your unwanted Christmas tree.

Traditionally, festive decorations are to be taken down on January 5, 12 days after Christmas. The Twelfth Night is a Christian festival marking the beginning of Epiphany.

But families may not have the patience to wait until then and could be keen to get their homes back to normal sooner rather than later. We have rounded up different locations you can recycling your tree this year.

Knowsley

You can recycle your real Christmas trees between until Sunday, January 8, 2023 by dropping them off at different locations in Knowsley. These include:

  • Halewood Park
  • Stadt Moers Park in Whiston
  • Millbrook Park Millennium Green in Kirkby
  • Court Hey Park, Huyton

Or you can take them to the Household Waste Recycling Centres in Huyton and Kirkby. These are open every day, 8am to 5pm.

Liverpool

In Liverpool, your real Christmas Tree can be taken to drop off points between January 3 and January 31, or to a local recycling centre. Drop off points are:

  • L4: Stanley Park car park, Arkles Lane
  • L5: Everton Park, Viewing Platform, Netherfield Road North
  • L7: Newsham Park, Gardener’s Drive, Sheil Road end
  • L8: Sefton Park, Review Field, Ullet Road Gate
  • L11: Croxteth Park, Oak Lane car park
  • L15: Wavertree Park, Tennis Centre car park
  • L17: Otterspool Promenade, first car park
  • L18: Calderstones Park, Calderstones Road car park
  • L18: Calderstones Park, Yew Tree Road car park
  • L19: Long Lane Recreation Ground, Garston
  • L24: Alderfield Road, Speke, by Millwood
  • L25: Woolton Road, Boys Club car park

St Helens

Until Sunday 9 January, residents will be able to drop off their real Christmas trees for recycling at these locations:

  • Sutton Park on Marina Avenue
  • Victoria Park on Bishop Road
  • Sankey Valley Visitor Centre, Blackbrook Road car park
  • Mesnes Park on Park Road North car park
  • Taylor Park, Grosvenor Road car park
  • Moss Bank Road open space

Sefton

Christmas trees can be taken to Household Waste Recycling Centres in Sefton. Sites are open every day from 8am to 5pm. These are:

  • South Sefton Household Waste Recycling Centre, Irlam Road in Bootle
  • Sefton Meadows Household Waste Recycling Centre, Sefton Lane in Maghull
  • Southport Household Waste Recycling Centre, Foul Lane in Southport
  • Formby Household Waste Recycling Centre, Altcar Road in Formby

Charitable ways to dispose of your tree

Hospices across the region are once again offering collections in exchange for a donation.

  • Willowbrook Hospice - In Knowsley, the service is available to those living in the L14, L28, L34, L35, L36, WA10, WA11, OR WA12 areas. Collections will take place between Monday January 9 to Friday January 20.
  • Queenscourt Hospice in Southport - trees will be collected between Friday 13 and Sunday, January 15. Collection postcodes include: PR8, PR9, PR4 6, L37, L39, L40, WN8.
  • Wirral Hospice St Johns in Higher Bebington - Christmas trees will be collected from January 5 to January 8. All you need to do is make a booking then make sure that your tree is left in your designated place before 8am on Friday, January 6.
  • St Joseph's Hospice in Thornton - Registration closes on January 4 and collections will be taking place between January 7 and January 8.

Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA) and its contractor Veolia are reminding local people that the region’s 14 Household Waste Recycling Centres are open most days, where all sorts of items can be recycled for free.

Real Christmas trees can be taken to your nearest recycling centre where they will be shredded and turned into chippings for compost. From October 1, 2022 until March 31, 2023 Merseyside’s Household Waste Recycling Centres will reduce their hours for the winter months.
