As we recover from the pandemic and the cost of living crisis continues to bite, the sad reality is that we have lost a lot of iconic Edinburgh restaurants, cafés and takeaways that many of us loved.
With some of them moved to new locations, relying on old ones or others that have been lost completely, here are the Edinburgh restaurants that we have lost so far in 2022.
Rollo
In late April, Rollo announced that they would be closing one of their two Edinburgh locations. Shutting the Raeburn Place restaurant just to focus on their Broughton site.

The restaurant was open for nearly a decade, opening eight years ago.
They announced the decision on social media, saying: "I am so sorry I haven’t been able to share any news about ROLLO Stockbridge…After eight years of fabulosity at Raeburn Place, it is now someone else's turn.
"I have realised that all my love and passion needs to be focused on one venue. So let us raise a glass to our darling ROLLO Stockbridge and to all of you who have shared the wonderful memories with me.
Kilted Donuts
Also in April, the popular Scottish Donut shop announced that they would close their Leith branch, citing lack of staff and the cost of living crisis specifically.
The Leith store closed on April, 24 and now can only be found at their Stockbridge store.
Also announcing their decision on social media, they said “It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to close our Leith shop.
“Our last day will be Sunday the 24th of April.
“The cost of living, increases in costs and a lack of staff have all combined to make it impossible to continue. We will put all our energy into our Stockbridge shop and will continue with home deliveries.
“We are deeply upset about leaving Leith. Thank you so much to everyone who came to visit us in Leith, we will miss you.”
Giancarlo’s
The last closure in April, Giancarlos Italian restaurant shut at the end of the month.
The eatery cited a shocking safety inspection that raised concerns the restaurant may be slipping into the ground.
The inspection discovered the foundations were potentially falling further into the pavement.
East Pizza
At the start of May, East Pizza announced that they would close their Morningside restaurant, citing staff shortages as the reason and a successful bid for a cite at the St James Quarter.
Known for carefully made gourmet pizzas, they even had a special recipe sourdough pizza base.
However, with their success with Bonnie and Wild, they decided to close their Morningside branch, calling it “unsustainable.”
They said: “Due to ongoing staff shortages and the success of east PIZZAS Dough, we have made the difficult decision to close our Morningside shop for the time being.
“We love this wee shop, but it has just become unsustainable to keep it going for now. We’ll keep you updated via this channel with news as we hope to re-open in the future.”
Dough
At the end of last month, the popular city centre pizza restaurant Dough announced their closure.
The Rose Street location also said staff shortages were one of the main reasons they could no longer stay open.
Announcing the decision on social media, they said: “Due to staff shortages our Rose Street location will be closing down from Monday the 30th of May. We would like to thank all of our customers for their support!
"Please note that South Clerk street will remain open for business but please be patient with our staff during this time.”
