Cardiff Bus has announced major changes to its city centre bus stops as lower Westgate Street finally reopens. The changes come into force from Monday, July 4, and you can find a new city centre bus stop map here.
Last year, the lower part of Westgate Street was closed to private cars in a bid to improve air quality in the capital. A "bus gate" was installed instead, meaning the road cannot be used as a through route in either direction for any traffic apart from buses, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians. The road layout underwent a significant change, so that more space is allocated for public transport and active travellers.
The following changes have been implemented:
- Royal Hotel bus stop on lower Westgate Street will re-open, for services 44/45 & 49/50 only
- Stop JA on Wood Street, outside the UK Government offices, will re-open for services 13, 15, 25, 62/63, 64, 66 & 96/96A (instead of the temporary stop on Westgate Street). Service 95 journeys that go from the city centre to the Heath Hospital will also call at stop JA
- A new bus stop, code JR, will be situated on Wood Street, westbound, in between the BBC and Cardiff University buildings, for services 4, 92/92B, 93, 94 & 95
- Service 4 will start and end from the new Wood Street JR stop
- Services 13, 15, 25, 62/63, 64, 66, 95 (to Heath Hospital) & 96/96A will start and end from Wood Street JA (outside the HMRC government offices) instead of the temporary stop on Westgate Street.
- Services 44/45 & 49/50 will call at Royal Hotel bus stop instead of Wyndham Arcade
- Services 92/92B, 93, 94 & 95 will start and end from the new Wood Street JR stop, instead of Philharmonic
- Services 96/96A will start and end from Wood Street JA (outside the HMRC government offices) instead of the temporary stop on Westgate Street
