Manchester City Council’s local election is just around the corner and there are 33 seats up for grabs.
When polls open on May 4, a total of 143 candidates are seeking election to 33 places on the council – one in each of the city’s 32 wards plus an additional vacancy in Ardwick following the retirement of a sitting councillor. This comes after the decision by Coun Bernard Priest to retire from his post after years of service to his ward.
The 2023 local elections are the first to take place under new national legislation which means that anyone voting in a polling station will need to take approved photo ID. A full list of eligible photo ID can be found at www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voterID.
Acceptable photo ID can be used even if it is out of date as long as the photo is still a good likeness of the elector. Anyone who doesn’t have eligible photo ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate (VAC) at www.gov.uk.
The deadline to apply for this certificate is 5pm on Tuesday 25 April. There is no need to apply for a VAC if you already have eligible photo ID.
The deadline to be registered to vote to take part in this year’s local elections is Monday, April 17. The deadline to register for a postal vote is 5pm on Tuesday, April 18.
Details on how to apply for a postal vote can be found at www.manchester.gov.uk/elections.
The election count results will take place overnight and be final in the early hours of May 5.
