All of the Scottish bank holiday dates coming up in April and May 2023

Easter is just around the corner, meaning the start of the April and May bank holidays isn't far away.

They're a great opportunity to see friends, unwind and generally just relax after working hard since Christmas. And there's even an extra day off for us to enjoy this spring thanks to the coronation of King Charles III, set to take place at the beginning of May.

These, along with the May bank holiday at the end of the month, means that there's four bank holidays for Scots in total over the next couple of months.

Bank holidays are spread out across the calendar and cover seasonal events such as Christmas, Easter and the New Year.

On these days, most schools and some businesses and shops tend to be closed in order to give staff and pupils some well-earned time off with their friends and family.

The bank holidays this spring kick off on April 7, which is Good Friday and the beginning of the Easter weekend.

We Scots unfortunately don't get Easter Monday as a bank holiday like England and Wales do, so the next bank holiday for us is on May 1 - otherwise known as the Early May Bank Holiday.

Then the following Monday will see the special royal event of the King's coronation take place, meaning we get an extra holiday on May 8 - even though the ceremony itself is taking place on Saturday, May 6.

The event will see King Charles III crowned monarch and Camilla crowned Queen Consort, and will take place at Westminster Abbey.

It's expected that thousands of street parties will be organised over the weekend, with people urged to come together across the UK for the Coronation Big Lunch on Sunday, May 7.

Musicians and stars will also take to Windsor Castle for the Coronation concert which will be broadcast live on the BBC also on May 7.

And bars, pubs and clubs will serve customers for an extra two hours between Friday May 5 and Sunday May 7, with opening hours extended from the normal 11pm to 1am.

The final holiday Scots can look forward to in May is the spring bank holiday which falls on Monday, May 29.
