All eyes on Cristiano Ronaldo as Manchester United outcast balances transfer wish and World Cup dream

Cristiano Ronaldo may not be playing much football for Manchester United these days, but the Portugal legend ensured the spotlight remains well and truly on him at the World Cup.

Ronaldo conducted a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan which came to light soon after United beat Fulham 2-1 in their final game of the season before the World Cup break. The 37-year-old tore into United, accusing the club of a lack of respect while also criticising the club's owners, the Glazer family.

United are now considering whether or not to sack Ronaldo. The Manchester Evening News revealed last week that the Reds feel Ronaldo was unfair in his criticism of the club's handling of his absence from their pre-season tour, while the majority of Ronaldo's teammates think he should never play for United again.

Ronaldo appeared unrepentant in the build-up to Portugal's first game of the World Cup against Ghana on November 24, despite the fallout from the interview overshadowing his nation's preparations. Still, despite Ronaldo's lack of goals and game time this season, he remains a real threat in Qatar - and if A Seleção are to go deep in the tournament, it's likely Ronaldo will play a key role in what will potentially be his last World Cup before a likely exit from Old Trafford.

Ronaldo's great rival, Lionel Messi, is also seeking to win his first World Cup in what will also likely be his last finals, and was off the mark with a goal against Saudi Arabia... only for Argentina to fall to a shock 2-1 defeat on November 22. At least one of Ronaldo and Messi will be leaving Qatar without the World Cup, but both are among the favourites to win the Golden Boot - and we want to know what YOU think.
