Both of the candidates running in the March 5, 2024, Democratic primary for Texas Board of Education District 10 — Daniel Caldwell (D, R, Green Party, Libertarian Party) and Raquel Saenz Ortiz (D) — completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. Caldwell is also running in the Republican primary on March 5, the Green Party convention on March 23, and the Libertarian Party convention on March 23.
Here are the candidates’ responses to the question: What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Caldwell:
“I will say it again — I care about kids. … I want to protect children from abuse and neglect and trauma and infanticide. … In addition to wanting to improve the governance of schools, I want to advocate for reform of needless judicial abuses which alienate, demonize, and disenfranchise relationships with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins by disallowing all contact with extended relatives — for literally no reason. … I have indicated my interest in facilitating self-sufficiency with maintaining a list of environmental quality-of-life supports, namely clean air and water, public facilities for rest and refreshment, accessible markets and employment, and community event halls and forums for learning. … I remain a critic of gerrymandering …”
Saenz Ortiz:
“I am particularly passionate about equity in education. I recognize that Black and Latino students pass the STAAR test at lower rates than their white and Asian counterparts. I am passionate about ensuring that legislation raises teacher salaries to ensure that teachers can fully commit to this work. I also am passionate about legislation that reduces inequity through shifts in school discipline (particularly moves towards restorative justice practices. I am also passionate about ensuring that state content standards and instructional materials promote critical thinking and diverse perspectives.”
