Both of the candidates running in the May 21, 2024, Democratic primary election for Georgia House of Representatives District 60 — Incumbent Sheila Jones (D) and Diane Clair (D) — completed Ballotpedia’s Candidate Connection survey. These survey responses allow voters to hear directly from candidates about what motivates them to run for office.
Here are the candidates’ responses to the question: What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Jones:
- “I support Affordable Housing and capping the rental rates for seniors living in Senior living facilities. I introduced HR 1502 urging the senior living industry to implement rent control measures for our seniors living in these facilities.
- I support improving healthcare access, which includes expanding Medicaid. I will continue to hold town hall meetings, send out newsletters of important issues that are taking place at the state capitol.
- I am always accessible. I assist constituents, their family and friends who call, email, or visit me at the state capitol. I have always (and will continue to) provide my cell number and email to everyone. I support and I’ve hosted the Georgia Women Veterans at the Capitol. The Governor signed my bill into law HB 373 which designates September 11 of each year as 1st Responders Appreciation Day in Georgia. I brought money home to my district for the Darnell Senior Facility (Fulton County) and the Vinings Historic Preservation Society (Cobb County).”
Clair:
- “Education: In Georgia students encounter various hindrances to their educational growth, including inadequate funding, outdated infrastructure, and limited access to educational resources. … We must implement effective strategies to improve attendance rates and reduce dropout rates. It is essential to demand better results from our schools and ensure that funding is distributed equitably.
- Housing: Affordable housing is a pressing concern that requires our attention. I propose implementing rent caps to make housing more affordable … pass legislation to provide individuals with a reasonable amount of time, more than 7 days, to address eviction notices. Revamping the foreclosure process is crucial … ensure that homeowners’ associations (HOAs) cannot foreclose on properties without just cause. … address the issue of eviction records …
- Gun Violence: Gun violence is a pressing issue that affects not only our district but the entire nation. Clair will labor to strengthen our gun laws to ensure the safety of our community. This includes implementing mandatory testing and licensing for gun owners, as well as providing comprehensive training on responsible gun ownership.”
