All aboard for fun-filled holiday club hosted by Lanarkshire church

It was all aboard for a fun-filled holiday club organised by an East Kilbride church.

The 'Adventure Cruise' holiday club at Claremont Parish Church saw land lovers find their sea legs.

Claremont Parish Church was delighted to offer the week-long holiday club to primary school aged youngsters, after two years of restricted kids’ activity due to lockdown.

Forty-eight children took part in the adventure cruise, during which the Sanctuary of the church was transformed into a luxury cruise liner, with a gangway, reception, cabins and canteen area.

The leaders all wore sailor uniforms designed and made by Liz Roy and Gary McVicar, the overall leader of the club, wore a full captain’s uniform.

Mirjam Murphy, families and young people's worker at the church told Lanarkshire Live : "When the captain came on board the children saluted him with a loud ‘Aye, aye Captain’ that probably could be heard far and wide in the neighbourhood.

"There were games, crafts and daily challenges as well as a puppet show and bible-inspired drama.

"Additional to the morning club, on the Thursday, the kids and parents were invited to take part in an outing at Strathclyde Country Park’s Watersports Centre.

"All children and parents taking part were able to get a ride on a speed boat on the loch, as well as try out the bumper boats and pedelos. This was financed by an anonymous donor from the congregation.

"The local Tesco at St Leonard’s sponsored the club by donating food for the community BBQ at which the children showcased to parents what they had learned during the week.."

A highlight for all the children was the opportunity to perform to ‘Build a Boat’ theme song by Colton Dixon in front of all the parents with dance moves which Mirjam had choreographed for the club.
