All 49 Americans to play in the Premier League with top five ranked

The date of July 4 may not mean much to us here in Blighty.

But across the pond it is of course Independence Day. And it is worth looking at how the United States' impact on the Premier League has been gradual over the years. From just a single American in the inaugural campaign to the prominence of players such as Christian Pulisic and coaches like Jesse Marsch, the perception of the States' relationship with football has changed vastly over the years.

Of course, later this year England will meet the USA in their World Cup group, hoping to erase memories of a forgettable 1-1 draw between the two sides back at the 2010 World Cup. With that in mind, Mirror Football takes a look at all 49 Americans to have played in the Premier League - and ranks the top five.

1. Clint Dempsey

His 57 goals for Fulham and Tottenham make him the highest-scoring American in Premier League history.

Dempsey was a huge fans favourite at Craven Cottage, helping Fulham seal three top-half finishes during his stay and featuring in their run to the Europa League final in 2010.

He is a worthy name at the top of this list given his contribution to the league and his quality.

2. Brad Friedel

The iconic goalkeeper spent 18 years in England, representing Liverpool, Blackburn, Aston Villa and Tottenham from 1997 to 2015.

He still holds a Premier League record for the most consecutive appearances in the competition after playing every single league game for eight consecutive seasons between 2004 and 2012.

He sits in the top 10 of the goalkeepers with the most Premier League clean sheets having kept 132 in his career.

3. Brian McBride

A cult hero at Fulham, McBride initially caught the attention of English fans with loan spells at Preston and then Everton.

He scored four in eight at Goodison Park and that prompted the Cottagers to buy him outright in January 2004.

He would spend four-and-a-half years in West London, scoring 33 goals for Fulham and playing a huge role in their great escape in the 2007-08 season under Roy Hodgson. A bona fide American Premier League legend.

4. Christian Pulisic

The only player in this top five still playing in the Premier League, Pulisic has been at Chelsea for three seasons and has already climbed to third in the list of top-scoring Americans in the competition with 19 goals.

The 23-year-old has become a key asset for the Blues and his stock is only likely to rise in years to come, giving him the chance to perhaps one day climb to the top of this list.

Will Christian Pulisic rise to the top of this list one day? Have your say in the comments!

5. John Harkes

Harkes was a trailblazer when he became the first ever American to play in the newly-formed Premier League in 1992 for Sheffield Wednesday. He therefore justifies his inclusion in our top five.

Harkes also played in the top flight for West Ham and Nottingham Forest and helped change the narrative and opinion surrounding American footballers.

The best of the rest

Claudio Reyna

Midfielder Reyna spent two years at Sunderland and four at Manchester City. During his career in England, he was popular with supporters and nicknamed 'Captain America' due to his status within the national squad.

His son, Gio Reyna, is now a key player for Borussia Dortmund.

Kasey Keller

Goalkeeper Keller represented four sides in the Premier League during his long career in England. He made his name for Leicester between 1996 and 1999 before going on to play for Spurs, Southampton and Fulham.

He would play his part in the Foxes' League Cup win in 1997 and also in Fulham's great escape in the 2007-08 campaign.

Tim Howard

Howard's 13 years in the Premier League began with Manchester United but he will be remembered as being an ever-present at Everton, where he played for a decade.

A dependable presence between the sticks, he remains a favourite among the Goodison Park faithful.

Roy Wegerle

Another of the trend-setting Americans in the early days of the Premier League, Wegerle represented Blackburn and Coventry in the top flight, having previously been at Chelsea, Luton and QPR.

He returned to the States after his Coventry deal expired in the summer of 1995.

Carlos Bocanegra

The defender spent four-and-a-half years at Fulham and proved a canny free transfer signing in that time, becoming a popular player with the Cottagers.

Landon Donovan

Donovan had two loan spells at Everton in the winters of 2010 and 2012 to aid his fitness during the MLS off-season. He fared pretty well first time around, winning the club's player of the month award for January 2010.

Brad Guzan

Goalkeeper Guzan made over 140 Premier League outings for Aston Villa and was number one for four seasons. He left for Middlesbrough in 2016 and made 10 further Premier League outings before returning to the States.

Here is every other American to have played at least once in the Premier League: Jozy Altidore, DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Bradley, Geoff Cameron, Bobby Convey, Jay DeMerit, Maurice Edu, Ian Feuer, Benny Feilhaber, Lynden Gooch, Marcus Hahnemann, Stuart Holden, Emerson Hyndman, Eddie Johnson, Jemal Johnson, Cobi Jones, Jermaine Jones, Jovan Kirovski, Eddie Lewis, Eric Lichaj, Matt Miazga, Joe-Max Moore, Oguchi Onyewu, Owen Otasowie, Preki, Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson, Josh Sargent, Brek Shea, Johann Smith, Juergen Sommer, Jonathan Spector, Zack Steffen, Indiana Vassilev, Zak Whitbred, Danny Williams, DeAndre Yedlin.
