Alistair Johnston breaks Celtic transfer silence as ambitious World Cup star shares lofty career ambition

In-demand Alistair Johnston has opened the door for a switch to Celtic as the ambitious right-back is determined to test himself in Europe.

The 24-year-old is starring for Canada at the World Cup and it's understood the Premiership champions are in talks over a potential deal to land the the Montreal Impact star. It comes with mounting speculation over the future of Josip Juranovic. The Croatia international has been watched by a host of clubs and could exit in January after talks over a new Parkhead deal.

Ange Postecoglou has stressed the need for Celtic to be agile in the transfer market and Johnston appears the identikit replacement if Juranovic moves on. And the player himself is full of belief he is ready to take the next step of his club career. Speaking amid growing interest, he said: “There is only so much I can say right now but if an opportunity arises, sure. I am really happy at Montreal and we have a great thing going, but at the same time I want to test myself, and I want to see how high I can go.

“That’s something that for all athletes deep down is in our DNA. You want to be competitive and push yourself to play against the best and see how high you can go. We never want to look back at our career and have the, ‘What if?’ question. I’ve nightmares thinking about that.

“I want to push the boundaries of what is physically capable for me. If that means going overseas, and trying to see what kind of level I can play at, then so be it. We will see how the World Cup goes and we will see what happens after that.”
