Alisson Becker and Brazil suffer World Cup penalty heartbreak as Neymar equals Pele record

It's heartache for Alisson Becker and Fabinho after Brazil were beaten in a penalty shootout by Croatia on Friday evening.

The match went to extra-time after no goals were scored inside the 90 minutes, but Neymar opened the scoring with his record equalling 77th goal for Brazil.

Neymar's superb finish was cancelled out by Bruno Petkovic with just minutes remaining in Qatar. Croatia won the following shootout 4-2, with Alisson unable to repeat his Liverpool heroics after helping the Reds to a shootout victory in the FA Cup last season.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward's opening strike looked to have won it for the five time winners after Neymar equalled Pele's 'official' record as all-time top Brazilian scorer - a record the Brazilian Football Confederation and Pele dispute as they say he scored 95 goals.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo stepped up to take the first penalty, but his weak effort was saved by Dominik Livakovic in the Croatian goal.

Croatia then scored their next four penalties as PSG defender Marquinhos needed to score the fourth penalty to give Brazil a slight chance, but he hit the post.

Fabinho was an unused substitute in the loss after manager Tite opted to bring on Manchester United's Fred to protect a delicate 1-0 lead.
