Alison Hammond's 'shameful' blunder after mistakenly believing she'd beat Ant and Dec

Alison Hammond shared her immediate reaction to learning she lost out on a National Television Award to Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly.

The 47-year-old was tipped to end the Geordie duo's 20-year winning streak, but was pipped to the post by the unbeatable pair, who were absent from proceedings after testing positive for Covid-19.

Sat in a glamorous black gown in the audience, Alison sat next to co-host Dermot O’Leary as she heard the Britain’s Got Talent favourites had won once again.

However, Alison said she thought she heard Strictly Come Dancing stars Nikita Kuzmin and Ellie Simmonds read out her own name.

During Friday’s instalment of This Morning, Alison said to Dermot: “You were the funniest partner. You sat next to me and you just made me laugh the whole show.

“The funniest thing is – obviously I was up for an award – and I heard Ant and Dec being called, but in my head, I heard Alison.”

Laughing, she continued: “Then I reached across to Dermot and said, ‘Did they say Alison?’ And Dermot went ‘No, they didn’t say Alison’. It was so shameful.”

Dermot replied: “It’s quite hard to hear in the room, so when you said it to me I just thought you were joking.”

However, during the National Television Awards the This Morning star teased that she should have scooped the award for Best Presenter at Wembley's OVO Arena in London on Thursday.

When she took to the podium to accept This Morning's Best Daytime award, Alison seized her opportunity to joke she ‘should have won.’

In her speech, Alison said: “We are all so grateful for this award, honestly. I think This Morning is a mood.

“Now we all know I should have won one of these as well. Bradley Walsh and Ant and Dec are amazing but I should have won, innit?”

Alison had been tipped by Good Morning Britain’s Kate Garraway to end Ant and Dec's 20-year winning streak by taking home the Best Presenter gong.

Speaking ahead of the event on Thursday, Kate said: “Alison Hammond might be in with a shout. I’ve just been on a DNA Journey with Alison. She’s huge fun and absolutely brilliant.

“I got to know her very well. I love Ant and Dec – we all love Ant and Dec – but if it isn’t them, I would love it to be Alison Hammond.”

Host Ben Shephard replied: “Wouldn't that be fabulous?” as Susanna Reid said: “It’s been them every single year.”
