Alison Hammond in tears on This Morning over Phillip Schofield interview

While presenting This Morning, Alison Hammond was in tears as she broke her silence on Phillip Schofield’s first TV interview since he left ITV. Schofield quit the broadcaster after he admitted having an affair with a colleague.

The former This Morning presenter, 61, has now issued an apology in a tell-all interview with Amol Rajan. He said: "I would say to everyone, to my family, my friends, my work colleagues, the public, to ITV, my management company, to everyone that I lied to, that I am desperately sorry."

ITV’s This Morning addressed the interview at the start of the show, which was hosted by Alison and Dermot O’Leary, The Liverpool Echo reports. Dermot said: "It's the top story on This Morning and we don't want to to shy away from it." He added: "It's difficult to cover this story as a friend and a colleague."

As they showed footage from the interview, Alison was in tears. She said: "I loved Phillip Schofield. It's weird because I still love him. As a family, we're all really struggling to process everything.

“My mum always said use your bible as your sat nav. He without sin cast the first stone. I don't want to say anything bad because I am in conflict."

Alison was clearly emotional as she said: "There is only so much a man can take." They were joined on the This Morning view by Gyles Brandreth who said there is a "duty of care" for all involved.

In the interview with the BBC, Mr Schofield admitted he felt broken and said words from his daughters saved his life. He added: "My girls saved my life. They said last week, they haven't left me for a moment, they have been by my side every moment because they're scared to let me out of their sight. What is that like for daughters to have to go through something like that?

"They said to me 'don't you dare do this on our watch, we're supposed to be looking after you'. If my girls hadn't been there then I wouldn't be here because I don't see a future. How much do you want a man to take?"
