Alison Hammond hosts This Morning solo as viewers 'short changed' by Phillip and Holly

Alison Hammond took the reins of This Morning on her own on Tuesday as viewers complained they felt 'short changed' by This Morning's much hyped special from Buckingham Palace.

There was great pomp and fanfare in the ITV studio on Monday when regular guest Gyles Brandreth arrived on set, flanked by trumpeters, to announce that Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield had been given the opportunity to host live from the palace in honour of the Queen's Jubilee.

Holly told viewers she was 'close to tears' by the news, with This Morning producers teasing a packed show that would include appearances from Gyles, fellow show regular Gok Wan and Eurovision star Sam Ryder. However, many viewers assumptions that the whole show would come from live from Buckingham Palace proved to be incorrect as Holly and Phillip handed over to Alison just after 11am, only one hour into the show.

Alison assured her colleagues and viewers that she had plenty coming up, including a live video interview with music legend Barry Manilow and a cookery demo from TV chef Clodagh McKenna. And, while many fans were delighted to see Alison, plenty more were disappointed that the Buckingham Palace broadcast was so short.

One took to Twitter to fume: "What's the point of having this morning live from Buckingham palace if u only are gonna do a hour thats it then go bk to the studio," with another replying: "I know." Another raised the question if Holly and Phillip's palace broadcast was in fact live, speculating that it was a pre-record.

Others took the time to heap praise on Alison, with one telling her: "Hi Alison you looked fabulous on this morning today. You can do this on your own and own it," and, as Alison interviewed a pet psychic,. another joked: "Alison has really pulled the short straw this morning."
