Alison Hammond found herself having to step in as Carol Vorderman went on a rant about her former pal while appearing on This Morning. The former Countdown star was back on the ITV daytime programme on Friday (January 27) alongside Gyles Brandreth.
The pair were back on hand to help Alison and her co-host Dermot O'Leary run through the latest news headlines in the show's daily 'This Morning's View' segment. Among the stories being discussed was that of Rod Stewart, who hit the headlines after phoning into a TV station and revealing he's abandoned his "long time" support for the Tories.
The singer made a surprise call into Sky News during a debate Thursday (January 26) on the NHS crisis. Rod, 78, said during the unexpected call that NHS workers 'aren't asking for a great deal' and said it was time to 'change the bloody Government'.
This led Carol to rant: "It's just sad, terribly sad, they knew this was coming [after the pandemic]." Alison replied: "It's the not knowing, isn't it? A scan can at least show you where we're at, but to not have that". Gyles interjected: "£15 billion was wasted on PPE, how many scans would that buy?"
To which Carol fumed: "Fifty contracts were given and they were all recommended by Tories. We all know it's a scandal." Becoming more passionate, she then added: "Rishi Sunak said he has put all his assets in a blind trust. He has refused to say whether he holds assets in Moderna. That man came out in front of 10 Downing Street, as our Prime Minister, and said 'accountability, transparency', all of this. If you are true to your word, Rishi Sunak, tell us."
Carol also took aim at her former friend Michelle Mone. After making claims about the businesswoman and Conservative life peer, she added: "I knew many years ago and then dropped her like a stone when I realised what kind of person she was," she added. Looking down the lens and raising her hands, Carol quipped: "Sue me, Michelle."
The 62-year-old continued to talk about Baranoess Mone before Alison was forced to cut her off mid-sentence. "Carol can I just say, she's not here to defend herself," she interjected. But Carol hit back: "No she's not here to defend herself," Carol agreed, adding: "I'm repeating what has been said in the press and has been proven to be true."
And This Morning viewers were flocking to social media to comment on Carol's moment of 'kicking off'. @sineadnics tweeted: "Really, really delightfully surprised by Carol Vorderman on #ThisMorning." @Paddy1094 said: "Yes!! Carol. @carolvorders telling it straight #ThisMorning. Let her host this show. She'd be brilliant."
@TraylorHolmes posted: "Carol Vorderman was READY today #ThisMorning." @AmbroseTwit commented: "@carolvorders is on fire #ThisMorning Go Carol!" @Tush27J added: "We need Carol Vorderman v Fiona Bruce on Question Time. That would be TV gold #ThisMorning. But @realjaneaird complained: "Get off your soapbox Carol… not the time or the place #ThisMorning."
