An Algerian court on Thursday sentenced former Minister of Industry Djamila Tamazirt to five years in prison on corruption charges, reported the state news agency APS.
The Sidi M’Hamed court in Algiers combined this conviction of Tamazirt with a fine of 300,000 dinars (about 1,900 euros) and ordered the seizure of all her assets.
She was accused of “false declaration of assets”, “abuse of office for obtaining undue privileges” and “granting undue advantages” when she was director of the public agrifood group Eriad.
During the trial, the prosecution had requested 10 years in prison against Tamazirt.
Her husband was also sentenced to two years in jail and an arrest warrant was issued against her brother-in-law.
After President Abdelaziz Bouteflika stepped down in April 2019 and after coming under the pressure from the pro-democracy Hirak rallies and the army, the judiciary launched a series of investigations into cases involving members of his entourage.
Tamazirt was appointed minister of industry and mines on April 1, 2019, a day before Bouteflika stepped down.
