An Algerian boxer competing in the Paris Olympics found herself at the center of a gender eligibility controversy, but managed to secure a victory in her first match against an Italian opponent. Imane Khelif, representing Algeria, faced off against Angela Carini from Italy and emerged victorious in just 46 seconds on Thursday.
The match took a surprising turn when Carini decided to abandon the fight after being struck twice in the face by Khelif. Carini made two visits to her corner during the bout, once to adjust her headgear and the second time to signal to her coaches that she could not continue.
Following the quick conclusion of the match, Carini was visibly upset and in tears as Khelif's hand was raised in victory. The Italian boxer expressed her frustration by directing her emotions towards her coaches after the fight.
Despite the controversy surrounding her participation, Khelif's win allows her to progress to the next round of the women's 66-kilogram division at the Olympics. The Algerian Olympic Committee (COA) stood firmly behind Khelif, denouncing any unwarranted attacks on her character and reputation.
In a statement, the COA condemned the baseless allegations and negative portrayal of Khelif by certain foreign media outlets. The organization emphasized the importance of supporting and protecting Khelif as she pursues her Olympic dreams.
