Alfredo Morelos Rangers 'offside' calls get the Sportscene treatment as pundits struggle with razor thin margin

Rangers' two disallowed goals in the draw against Motherwell were given the BBC Sportscene treatment as the two pundits on duty couldn't return a verdict on a particularly tight second half decision.

Alfredo Morelos was foiled by the offside flag twice on Sunday afternoon as Gers led 2-1 through Bevis Mugabi's own goal and Fashion Sakala's strike, while Jordan Roberts had responded for the Steelmen.

Kaiyne Woolery's frantic equaliser was still to come but Morelos couldn't believe he was denied by the near side linesman on two occasions - and on first viewing he could have a case on one of the incidents.

Retired ex-Rangers and Hearts forward Steven Naismith was first to offer his verdicts.

He said: "This one is offside, with his body leaning forward it emphasises the point that he is offside.

"For me this one is offside, it's the clearer one."

But Naismith reckons it's harder to provide a verdict on the tighter of the two calls.

He continued: "The second one, for me, until we get better camera angles than that then you're not going to get...

"It's a fantastic ball from Kent to see that pass but what goes against him is he's this side (nearer) of the centre-half in the line of the linesman.

"Fantastic finish but it's small margins."

Former Motherwell and Scotland hero James McFadden added: "You can see Bevis Mugabi's right foot is most likely playing Alfredo Morelos onside but we can't see along the line.

"We've not got VAR. We're not going to have VAR for another year at least.

"What I will say is the assistant is looking straight across the line so you expect him to get it right but they don't always.

"We can't tell for sure whether it's on or not."
