Alfredo Morelos holds crunch Rangers talks as Gio van Bronckhorst rolls out the red carpet for 'important' star

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has given his strongest hint yet that Alfredo Morelos has a major part to play in Rangers' season.

The Colombian hitman was summoned for talks with the Light Blues gaffer after he was left out of the travelling squad to face PSV in the crucial Champions League play-off clash in the Netherlands due to various concerns including fitness levels and his attitude in the early part of the campaign.

Just hours after being left out of the trip the striker was snapped at the gym and has continued to work hard behind the scenes with the Dutchman revealing he has already noticed a change in his attitude and his work levels. His contract has less than 12 months to run with speculation over his long-term future a main talking point following the flashpoint last week. However, Van Bronckhorst has opened up on his talks with Morelos and says he will be 'important' to Rangers in the months ahead as they bid to recapture the Premiership title from Celtic and make a splash in the Champions League.

Speaking after the win over Queen of the South in the Premier Sports Cup, he said: "Yeah well I said it before, I had a good chat with him on Sunday. He had a good week to train but to think about his future. I had a good talk with him so as I said before he is still a Rangers player. He's going to be important for us in the months of the season.

"I saw a change in his attitude, the way he worked. He needs to continue working like this for the next coming months to be the player he can be. A player who can give us a lot."

The summer transfer window is set to slam shut at midnight tomorrow as clubs up and down the country continue to try and add to their squads and move bodies on. It's already been a busy couple of months for the Rangers boss who says he is relaxed over the situation but says 'you never know' heading into the final 48 hours.

He added: “I’m relaxed, we still have a couple of days. You never know what’s happening in those days. At the moment I think this is the squad we’re going to have as I said before. We created this squad to be competitive and reach the Champions League.”
