Alfredo Morelos at Rangers crossroads but new deal could cement legendary status, says Kenny Miller

Alfredo Morelos is at a crossroads in his Rangers career.

That's the verdict of former Ibrox striker Kenny Miller.

The Colombian hitman missed the end of season run in after suffering a thigh injury that required surgery and ruled him out of the Europa League Final and Scottish Cup runs.

Morelos is heading into the final 12 months of his current Rangers deal with talks ongoing about extending his stay in Glasgow.

The fans' favourite has never hidden his desire to one day play at a higher level and Miller says he could potentially look to run down his deal to make that happen.

However, he does note that the 25-year-old appears really happy and settled at the Light Blues and if he does pen a new deal, he could go on to earn legendary status at the club.

Writing in his Sunday Mail column, Miller said: "While there has been plenty of speculation about the future of Connor Goldson, Calvin Bassey, Joe Aribo and others at Rangers, it had been all quiet on Morelos.

"That would have been largely due to the injury he picked up late in the season and his absence in the Europa League and Scottish Cup finals.

"But make no mistake, this is going to be a huge summer for my old team-mate.

"In fact, it could be a pivotal crossroads in his Rangers career.

"In the last few days, he’s been linked with Sevilla. And going into the final year of his contract at Ibrox, that’s not surprising.

"Morelos has a big call to make in the next few months.

"And he’s in total control of the situation.

"Rangers won’t want to let it run his deal down, that’s for sure.

"All that does is create rumours and fuel uncertainty.

"The player and his manager then have to deal with that, which is why it has to be resolved. And by all accounts, it looks like discussions over a new contract have already started between the club and Alfredo.

"But the Colombian is the one with the decision to make.

"Over the course of five years here, he’s said that he’d like to play in a better league.

"So far, only Lille have made a concrete bid but the French side never met Rangers’ valuation.

"If Alfredo really wants a move to the Premier League, La Liga or the Bundesliga, he might feel the best opportunity now is to go on a free next summer.

"The flip side to that is he looks happy at Rangers. He’s found a home here and is adored by the Ibrox fans.

"So there are two sides to it. But he is the one who holds all the aces here.

"With just a year left, if Rangers want to sell now I’d be surprised if they got an eight-figure fee. It would be millions, just not tens of millions.

"At this stage, if the club wants to maximise his value, trying to get him re-signed is paramount.

"Because then, even if he did leave in a year or two, they could get a much bigger transfer fee.

"A new contract could see him at the club for almost 10 years.

"He arrived as a 20-year-old and might spend the majority of his career at Rangers. And if he continued scoring, Morelos could become one of the all-time greats at Ibrox.

"As long as he stays fit and in form, Alfredo could hit 200 goals for Rangers.

"He’s got a long way to go before he catches Ally McCoist as all-time top scorer.

"But if he signs a new contract this summer, he could go on to cement proper legendary status at the club."
