Alfredo Morelos and the post-Rangers Brazil transfer option

Alfredo Morelos left Rangers at the end of his contract in June.

The Colombian forward has yet to find a new club after two months as a free agent.

According to reports abroad though, that could be about to change - with the ex-Gers hero inadvertently involved in somewhat of a transfer saga.

It's said the 27-year-old could be set for a permanent return to South America.

Brazilian giants Santos are believed to be interested in the frontman.

They are fighting to keep hold of wonderkid Marcos Leonardo, although Jose Mourninho's Roma are chasing his signature.

The Serie A side recently had a £15million offer rejected by Santos, with the 20-year-old then refusing to play for his club as he looks to force a move through to Europe.

And according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, should Leonardo get his wish, then Santos are looking at Morelos as his replacement.

The transfer market in Brazil had closed, but with Morelos being a free agent, he is a realistic option for the club.

To add further weight to the saga, Neymar's £69m switch from PSG to Al-Hilal could provide Santos with a further cash injection to ensure they can afford Morelos' wages.

They are due a solidarity payment of around £3million. Neymar started his career at Santos before moving to Barcelona.

Morelos has made no secret of the fact he wants to remain in Europe. But with no new club, the chance to play for one of South America's biggest clubs could appeal.

His agent spoke about his client at the weekend. He said: "I am negotiating with several top clubs from Russia who are interested in signing Alfredo Morelos. There is a very strong championship in Russia, which Alfredo looks at with great admiration."
