Alfredo Morelos and how Rangers could earn £20m from transfer as Ibrox situation 'bad business'

Rangers shouldn't have let their contracts run down into their final 12 months - but former defender Craig Moore says they can still stand to make a jackpot on striker Alfredo Morelos.

The Colombian forward is into the final year of his Ibrox deal after arriving in Glasgow in 2016, with fellow attackers Ryan Kent and Joe Aribo in a similar situation. Reports have started to swirl on what comes next for Morelos and Sevilla have been linked with taking him to southern Spain in a deal that would rake Rangers in less than eight figures.

It was once spoken that Morelos in particular could grab his club upwards of £20 million but with his terms ticking down, such a fee is likely going to be too much. They run the risk of losing him, Aribo and Kent for free next summer if they don't cash in before August ends.

Moore reckons it shouldn't have come to this but putting fresh terms down could see some money recouped.

It could even allow someone like the striker to make a fortune for boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst if he hits top form. So far this summer, the Dutchman has only recruited Scotland defender John Souttar.

He told Go Radio: "I think the most important plan is to not let players run their contracts down. That's when you lose out as a club as they are able to leave for free. Decisions have to be made 24 months out.

"You can't have two or three players running their contracts down. That's bad business. Anything can happen in that final year, with the player too in terms of their health.

"I wouldn't want to lose Morelos as goals are difficult to replace and goals are a guarantee with Alfredo Morelos.

"That's the one that is always a concern for me. At the right time I am sure that will happen. But he would be a huge loss. If they extend that contracts and is electric, you are looking at £16-£20 million.

"That is where the value will jump to in a year if he goes on to have a really good year."
