Alfa Romeo’s Fred Vasseur appointed Mattia Binotto’s replacement as Ferrari team principal

Ferrari have appointed Alfa Romeo boss Fred Vasseur as their new team principal to replace the outgoing Mattia Binotto.

Vasseur had long been mooted as a replacement for Binotto after the Italian resigned from his role following a disappointing Formula 1 season by the Italian manufacturer.

And the appointment of Vasseur, who had also previously led Renault’s F1 operation, was made official on Tuesday morning.

The Frenchman said: “I am truly delighted and honoured to take over the leadership of Scuderia Ferrari as team principal. As someone who has always held a lifelong passion for motorsport, Ferrari has always represented the very pinnacle of the racing world to me.

“I look forward to working with the talented and truly passionate team in Maranello to honour the history and heritage of the Scuderia and deliver for our Tifosi around the world.”

Vasseur had earned Ferrari’s attention for the manner in which he turned Alfa Romeo from backmarkers into a solid midfield team on the grid during his tenure at the helm. The team finished sixth out of 10 teams in this year’s constructors’ championship last season with 55 points.

The 54-year-old had been with the team since 2017 and faces arguably the most high-profile and pressurised job on the F1 grid in returning to Ferrari back to the top.

Following his appointment, Ferrari CEO Benedetto Vigna said: “Throughout his career, Fred has successfully combined his technical strengths as a trained engineer with a consistent ability to bring out the best in his drivers and teams. This approach and his leadership are what we need to push Ferrari forward with renewed energy.”
