Liverpool have the opportunity to close the gap on Manchester City next season, provided their summer transfer activity proves to be a success.
The Reds have been scrutinised in recent months for failing to address their shortcomings in the midfield department, a mistake the club are not expected to make this time around.
Alexis Mac Allister is the individual who continues to be linked with a move to Anfield, on the back of an impressive year for the Argentine for both club and country.

It is understood Liverpool are looking to wrap up any business early in the transfer window, ensuring changes to the squad could soon be seen. Below is a round-up of the latest rumours relating to the Reds.
Mac Allister father flies in for talks
Alexis Mac Allister's father, who also serves as his son's agent, will reportedly fly to England 'in the next few hours' as a move for the Argentine midfielder edges ever closer.
The Brighton midfielder is a priority target for Liverpool and it is understood this is a deal progressing in the right direction, highlighted by a latest update on the situation.
Fabrizio Romano has stated Mac Allister's father will 'complete final details' as regards personal terms, with a deal expected to be done 'next week'.
Pavard and Gravenberch uncertainty
Bayern Munich are 'willing to sell' Benjamin Pavard this summer, with the French defender keen to leave the Bundesliga title winners.
Sky Germany have explained his exit will be determined by the figure clubs are willing to spend on the 2018 World Cup winner. Bayern are said to be searching for between €30million (£25.8m) and €40m (£34.4m) or a swap deal plus a negotiable fee.
Liverpool are one of the clubs listed as an option or the 27-year-old, alongside Barcelona, Inter Milan, Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Elsewhere, the future of a fellow Bayern star linked with Liverpool is also said to be 'uncertain'. Ryan Gravenberch, according to SPORT1, is seeking a 'clear plan' from Thomas Tuchel or could push for an exit.
Kamada hijack
Liverpool are attempting to hijack a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt star Daichi Kamada, it has been claimed.
The Japan international, who has scored 16 goals and registered seven assists this season, is out of contract at the end of this month and will leave his current employers after six years of service.
AC Milan are closing in on a deal to recruit the 26-year-old on a free transfer, though Calciomercato have claimed Liverpool are among the teams who have 'not lost hope' on scuppering this plan and are capable of putting a 'more important offer on the plate'.
