Alexis Mac Allister's Liverpool shirt number confirmed after £45m transfer announced

Alexis Mac Allister will wear the number 10 shirt for Liverpool after sealing a £45million move from Brighton.

The World Cup winner is Liverpool's first signing this summer and Mirror Football understands the Reds have forked out an initial fee of between £45-50m, which will then be supplemented by performance-related add-ons.

Mac Allister has been handed the number 10 shirt which he wore at both Brighton and Argentinos Juniors. The number has been vacant since Sadio Mane left Liverpool to join Bayern Munich last summer and has previously been worn by the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Michael Owen and Steve McManaman.

"I know how important number 10 is in football," Mac Allister said. "I had the possibility to take the number eight as well, which is a big number for this club because of [Steven] Gerrard of course.

"But I decided for number 10 because I use it in Argentina, in Brighton and under-23s national team as well. It's a number that I really like and that's why I chose it."

And the 24-year-old is hoping to win more trophies at Liverpool, having lifted the World Cup with Argentina back in December. Mac Allister added: "It feels amazing. It's a dream come true, it's amazing to be here and I can't wait to get started.

"I wanted to be in [from] the first day of pre-season, so it's good that everything is done. I'm looking forward to meeting my teammates. It was a fantastic year for me – World Cup, what we achieved with Brighton – but now it's time to think about Liverpool and try to be a better player and a better human being every day.

"Since I won the World Cup, I said that I want to win more trophies and I think that this club will help me to do that – that's the aim and when you are in a big club like this one you have to win trophies. So, that's what I want.

"Since I arrived here, I can see how big this club is – the players we have, the staff, everyone. I'm really pleased and looking forward to playing for this club."
