Alexis Mac Allister Irish heritage explained as Brighton player stars for Argentina at the World Cup

Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring for Argentina in their vital World Cup game with Poland this evening.

With red hair and a name like Mac Allister, you may be wondering if the 23-year-old has any Irish blood in him.

The simple answer is yes. Mac Allister is of Irish and Scottish heritage. In an interview with the Official Olympics website, Mac Allister explained, "The surname Mac Allister comes from Ireland."

His ancestors are part of a wave of Irish people who emigrated to the South American country in the 1830's. To this day, almost 1 million Argentinians can trace their heritage back to Irish ancestors.

Mac Allister signed for Brighton in 2019 before spending time on loan at Boca Juniors and Portimonense. Since moving to England, Mac Allister has made 77 appearances Premier League appearances and has scored 11 goals.

Argentina currently lead Poland by one goal to nil with 30 minutes remaining.
