Alexis Mac Allister backs ‘great player’ Enzo Fernandez to live up to £107m Chelsea price tag

Alexis Mac Allister believes Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez is proving worth his price tag.

The Argentine, fresh from winning the World Cup alongside Mac Allister, became the most expensive signing in the history of British football with a £107m move to Stamford Bridge in January.

That record has since been broken following Moises Caicedo’s move to Chelsea this week after the Ecuadorian snubbed the chance to join Mac Allister at Anfield.

While Fernandez endured a difficult opening few months in west London, the 22-year-old produced perhaps his best display yet against Mac Allister’s Reds on Sunday.

There is a belief that partnering Fernandez with Caicedo will allow the former Benfica midfielder to flourish, with the pair lined up for prominent roles at the club for the next decade.

Romeo Lavia’s expected arrival could also see Fernandez pushed up to a No.10 role too, after excelling there against Liverpool.

Speaking to Paramount+, Mac Allister said of his compatriot: “I have already faced him several times, I have played with him, he is a great player.

“I respect him a lot, I have a great relationship. Today he showed why they paid what they paid for him, why he is here, and it makes me happy for him, obviously.”
