An Alexandria widower has thanked a stranger for brightening up his day, after she paid for his breakfast in a Balloch restaurant.
Billy McCluskey said he was shocked by the gesture from two young women in Corries.
Billy’s wife of more than 60 years, Pat, passed away in April – with the 85-year-old hoping to cheer himself up with a breakfast at the spot the couple used to eat in regularly.
However, he was blown away when a waitress told him his meal had been paid for by two strangers.
It comes after the Lennox Herald reported last week how a stranger had paid everyone’s bills at the ChariTea cafe in Dumbarton – which is operated by lifeline foodbank, Food for Thought.
Having read the story, Mr McCluskey reached out to the Lennox to thank the kind samaritans.
He said: “Last Wednesday I was feeling a wee bit down. I went into the Co-op in Balloch to get a few things and pay a couple of bills, and after that, I decided to go into Corries.
“My wife and I used to go there quite regularly.
“I was sitting and had ordered a breakfast. Whilst I waited, a waitress came over and told me that a young lady had paid my bill.
“I’d never seen her in my life before. I don’t have a clue who she is. But she was away before I could say anything.
“I was so depressed. I was thinking about Pat sitting across the table from me.
“I was sitting there on a real downer and that lassie made my day.
“I couldn’t believe the difference it made.
“Nothing like this has ever happened to me in my life before. When I saw the story in last week’s Lennox I knew I needed to highlight it as another example of someone having a big heart.”
And Billy was keen to stress the good that remains in our communities - even during challenging times.
He added: “It just goes to show that there are good people around.”
