Alexandra Burke was overcome with emotion as she explained why she’s kept her baby’s name and gender a secret during Monday’s Loose Women.
The singer, 34, who welcomed her first child with her footballer partner Darren Randolph, 35, in July, said she didn’t want her fame to “impact” her family.
A tearful Burke told the panel: “I come from X Factor which is public and gave me a platform. In the process I asked for this but my family never…”
Composing herself, she added: “The impact on them is hard and they never asked for it. I want to protect the baby as much as I can and let the baby make its own decision.
“When I spoke to my friend I said, ‘I don’t want to hurt anyone.’ My mum would say it’s the wise thing to do.”
Despite her initial tears, the Broken Heels singer said she is the “happiest she’s ever been”, although “sleep is a thing of the past”.
Burke continued: “Oh gosh, how life has changed. Sleep is a thing of the past. It’s changed in a brilliant way. I’ve never known love like this before. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been.
“It’s overwhelming, you can’t put it into words. It’s the greatest gift in the world. I’m so happy.”
The X-Factor winner, who lost her mum Melissa Bell in 2017 following a battle with diabetes mellitus, added: “I think my mum would be really proud, she always wanted me to have kids. My mum was remarkable and raised four children alone.
“My respect level is so much more from what she sacrificed for us to have food on the table... It’s been put into respect now I have a baby.”
Burke has been dating partner Darren Randolph since 2021 after splitting from footballer Angus MacDonald in October 2020, after 15-months of dating.
Randolph previously dated The Saturdays star Rochelle Humes before she married JLS singer and Capital DJ Marvin Humes in 2012.
