Alexander Isak injury: Eddie Howe confirms latest after striker suffers scare ahead of Carabao Cup final

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has provided an update on Alexander Isak’s fitness ahead of the Carabao Cup final.

Isak missed Newcastle’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday with a slight groin problem but returned to the starting lineup for their dramatic FA Cup fifth round defeat to Brighton on Sunday.

The striker opened the scoring with a first-half penalty before the Seagulls struck back and ultimately won the game 2-1 thanks to Danny Welbeck’s goal in extra-time.

Anthony Gordon was sent off for Newcastle and will now miss the Carabao Cup showdown with Liverpool on Sunday March 16 at Wembley.

Concern was raised not long after the winger was dismissed too, with Isak going down to get treatment before coming off for Callum Wilson.

Still, Howe was keen to allay any fears about a serious injury after the game.

“Alex just felt a bit of general tightness,” he said.

“I don’t think it was an injury, it was just general tightness, but we felt as though he had to come off.”
