Alexander Isak 'has already started to repay hefty fee' for Newcastle United

Former Everton defender Ashley Williams has hailed “talented” Newcastle United new boy Alexander Isak. Just hours after being granted permission to play by the UK Home Office, the Swede stunned Anfield to fire the Magpies in front.

However, a controversial offside decision denied Isak the dream start to life on Tyneside when he found the net again in the second half. The 22-year-old shimmied past two Reds defenders and blasted past Alisson only to be thwarted by the linesman’s flag and a tight VAR call.

A dream debut was ultimately snatched away from him when Liverpool equalised before scoring a brutal 98th-minute winner. Despite the defeat, Newcastle fans were still left in awe of their £58million man.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Williams also raved about Isak’s potential. The ex-Swansea skipper believes last night’s showing proves the Swedish international can cut it in the Premier League.

“He (Isak) has scored on his debut,” Williams said. “I saw this guy in the Euros and he looked very talented.

“It is a hefty fee but, as we can see today, he's already started to repay that. Eddie Howe said he hadn't trained a lot before the game and you could see that at times.

“He didn't move too much but we know he has good feet; he is mobile. (For) his goal, he just pulls off the defender and has the confidence to let that run across his body, hit it first time and it's a good finish.

“At Anfield, at your new club…. it just shows what kind of confidence he has. This didn't count (the second goal) because he was just about offside.

“But he is one v one with the goalkeeper there and has the presence and the composure to chop one, chop two… another good finish as well. We need to keep a close eye on Alexander Isak because he looks a talent.”
