Alexander Ferguson wins battle of Paisley golfers to seal Match Play title

It was a battle of Paisley’s finest as Buddies on and off the course fought it out for the Renfrewshire Match Play Championship title.

After a long build up of knockout matches, the final four competitors gathered at East Renfrewshire Golf Club to contest the semi-finals and finals on Sunday.

Three of the four left in the race for the trophy were Paisley Golf Club members, which resulted in some very interesting clashes on the course.

Conditions were fairly good for the final two rounds, with breezy conditions present that the competitors coped well with.

In the morning semi-finals, Alexander Ferguson (Paisley GC) overcame the challenge of his Paisley teammate Owen Lavelle to win
by 3/2.

That win set up a final against another one of his Paisley team members, Jack Bradley.

Bradley put in fine performance to overcome the challenge of local player, county stalwart and former British amateur champion Craig R Watson, winning 2/1.

Golf in both of the semi-finals was of the highest standard, with birdies and bogeys being exchanged in the midst of some fine par
golf.

In the final it was the bragging rights of best match player in the county up for grabs, with the two Paisley team members going head to head for the title.

Both of the players were in fine form, highlighted by the fact they were the top two available qualifiers for the Match Play Championship before play began on the day.

The final was played in great spirit, and while it was a relaxed affair as the players knew one another well it was nonetheless very
competitive.

After a hotly contested match, it was Ferguson that eventually came out on top, winning 3/1.

A Renfrewshire Golf Union spokesperson said: “We would like to thank East Renfrewshire Golf Club captain Alan Scott, his committee, members and catering staff, for the courtesy of the course and for the condition in which it was presented.”
